What is ABA?

The gold standard in autism therapy

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding how behavior works and how learning takes place. It is the most extensively studied and widely accepted treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the US Surgeon General.

ABA therapy focuses on building communication, social, and daily living skills while reducing behaviors that may interfere with learning — all through positive reinforcement and data-driven programming.

Research consistently shows:
Early ABA (before age 3) produces the strongest long-term outcomes
Significant gains in language, communication, and adaptive skills
Improved social interaction and school readiness
Reduced need for intensive supports later in life
🏠
Home-Based & Naturalistic

Sessions take place in your home, in the environment where your child feels safest. Learning happens through play and daily routines — not in a clinic.

📊
Data-Driven Programming

Every session is measured and tracked. BCBAs review data regularly to adapt your child's program and ensure continuous progress.

🤝
Caregiver Partnership

You are an essential part of your child's therapy. We train caregivers to use ABA strategies throughout the day, extending learning beyond each session.

FAQ

Common questions about ABA

Does my child need an autism diagnosis to receive ABA?
No. Under the Early Intervention Program, ABA services can be provided based on developmental need. A formal autism diagnosis is not required to start. An EI evaluation will determine eligibility and appropriate services.
Is ABA therapy really free?
Yes. All Early Intervention services, including ABA, are provided at no out-of-pocket cost to families. Your child's insurance may be billed as allowed under the program, but you are never charged a co-pay or fee.
What does a typical ABA session look like for a toddler?
ABA for toddlers is play-based and naturalistic — it doesn't look like formal therapy. Sessions happen at home during everyday activities like snack time, playtime, and bath routines. The therapist follows your child's lead, embedding learning opportunities naturally throughout the visit. Sessions are engaging and child-directed.
Who supervises the ABA program?
All ABA programs at United Steps Therapy are designed and supervised by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). BCBAs hold master's or doctoral degrees and are licensed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. They oversee all programming, data analysis, and caregiver training.
How many hours of ABA does my child need?
The number of hours is individualized based on your child's needs and determined through the IFSP process. The BCBA will recommend an appropriate intensity level based on the evaluation results and your child's goals.
What happens when my child turns 3?
Early Intervention services end at age 3. Our team will work with your family to transition to the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE), which manages school-based services for children ages 3–5. We ensure continuity so your child's progress is never interrupted.
